Evil Superuser’s HOWTO: Launching instances to do your bidding

You click ‘run’ on the OpenStack dashboard, or launch a new instance via the api. Some provisioning magic happens and soon you’ve got a server created especially for you. Did you ever wonder what magic happens to a standard image on boot? Have you wanted to launch instances and have them into your infrastructure with no manual interaction?

Cloud-init is software that runs in most linux instances. It can take your input and do your bidding. Learn what things cloud-init magically does for you and how you can make it do more.

Also, take advantage of the after-talk to pester cloud-init developers on what is missing or throw rotten fruits in their direction.

Deploying a Hybrid Cloud with OpenStack: Dynamic Service Automation

Hybrid cloud represents the next evolution in enterprise cloud architecture and enables businesses to enjoy the best of both worlds: infrastructure resource elasticity with the flexibility of a public cloud, and the security, control and regulatory compliance of a private cloud.

As ideal as hybrid cloud may sound, it still can face challenges from both sides. There are still significant complexities to federate disparate domains in the wide area networks together to securely and reliably connect and scale public and private clouds in an integrated way. Operational challenges of managing heterogeneous environments with different architecture requires a new approach, as well as a clean approach to agile software delivery and continuous integration. Finally, there is a need to create these environments in a secure, scalable, and multi-tenant manner.

The OpenStack Summit talk selection process is broken

OpenStack is big and everybody wants to be a part of it. More and more vendor organisations want to ride the OpenStack wave and see getting talks on the summit schedule as a key way to strengthen their position as an OpenStack mover and shaker. The net result is 1500+ talk submissions which the current selection process cannot handle. There has to be a better way, join Mark Baker to discuss problems with the current process and how it might be improved.

In this presentation you will find answers to these questions and to other common questions related to the deployment, configuration and use of MongoDB and MySQL databases in OpenStack.
We will review and analyse the results of popular benchmarks for MongoDB and MySQL in typical configurations, and some typical architectures implemented by users to achieve optimum performance and high availability.

Please note that this is not a comparison between two database servers: MongoDB and MySQL have been selected as they are the most used databases in the cloud, as they often coexist in users’ environments.
